NEW MEXICO NATIVITY


New Mexico Nativity

nativity: from the Latin nativus meaning "born" or "native"

four-wing saltbush       chamisa angels
bosque cranes in snow-covered corn fields
a diminutive herd of coeus deer
sweet fawns in the foothills
churro lambs on the rez
wild horses
a burro

gather

cooing doves
perch on low branches
            inca
            mourning
            common ground
            rock
            white-winged

gather

sleepy cinnamon black bear people     
mexican gray wolf pups
foxes three
            kit
            swift
            gray
coyote

gather

mountain lion people
bobcat people
pretty spotted and striped skunks
black-footed ferret people
thin slip of a weasel
river otter rabbit ringtail raccoon
a badger

gather

coati chipmunk trés squirrels
            rock
            abert's
            red
a kangaroo rat
pinon deer mice people

gather

finches
chickadees
downy woodpecker
juniper pinon spruce people
sparrows in sparrow variety
wise owl

gather

winter fat       wooly and white
creosote sage snowberry
countless bright stars
full jupiter and venus
crescent moon rising at dawn       
light people

gather

a new babe grasps a pine bough
in each tiny perfect fist
a grandmother rises
touches the spot between this little one's bright eyes
her daughter's       her own
dabs sticky pine sap       as a blessing       a promise
